Maverick’s dramatic exit kills all interest in reclaiming a piece of my heritage, and I tell Brody I’m ready to head back. I figure, between Drake and Maverick, my mouth has done enough damage for one night, so I take a vow of silence as we descend into the tunnel system once again.

Helm House is run down and forgotten, and no one cares.

Brody gave up tending to it long ago. Wyatt doesn’t want anything to do with it. And if the student body finds out why I wanted to connect with the mausoleum, Wyatt and I will once again be tormented and ostracized. We’ll be branded the offspring of a good for nothing traitor.

Even saying that in my head makes me crazy.

My dad made mistakes, but he’s loyal and steadfast and guided by the strongest sense of duty I’ve ever witnessed. His moral compass may make him unpopular at times, but he stands by his convictions no matter what it costs him.

I’m proud of him for that…

I rethink my argument, and my dinner flips in my gut. And I’m sure Maverick feels the same way about his granddad.

“I’m such a jerk.”

Brody places his hand on the ID scanner and opens the security door at the end of the Helm tunnel. Once in the public tunnel system, he lays an arm across my shoulders and turns to face me. “Don’t be so hard on yourself. Even before Exemplar, your life was a daily struggle for survival. That makes a person hyper-focused on their situation. Your survival instinct—”

Incoming! The warning comes from my eagle, and I can barely process the shock of her presence before my body is reacting on instinct.

I roll away from Brody and catch myself against the stone wall of the corridor as several golden spells zoom past me and explode on the door behind us.

“Sheeld.” I throw up my palms, creating a golden seal of magik, dividing us from the attackers charging down the hall.

“Contane.” Power flows from me and another wall of my magik appears behind them, trapping them in the middle.

Brody took a hit and is rolling to his knees, cursing.

I take in three guys in black flack pants and ski masks, and the déjà vu isn’t good. They’re spellcasting against my containment but getting nowhere.

I feel a slight vibration, nothing more. “Gotcha.”

“You okay?” Brody scowls at the masked attackers.

“Says the old guy scraping himself off the floor.”

Brody chuckles. “I can’t even tell you how much spending time with you is like old times with your dad. Okay, get ready to drop the containment field. I’ve got the next part. On one. Three. Two. One.”

When Brody hits one, I drop the containment.

“Inkarsureyt.” With one hand, he throws out the spell. With the other, he extends his arm as if grabbing them in his hand. When he closes his fingers, they’re gone.

I blink at him. “Where’d they go?”

Brody frowns. “I have no idea.”

We stand there, staring at the empty corridor surrounding us. “How did they just poof into thin air? Was it a portal? I didn’t feel one open.
